Loose Flange
The loose flange is a special pipe connection, also called the lapped joint flange. It is a flange connection composed of two symmetrical half sets of washers and a connecting bolt. Its characteristic is that the connecting bolts act directly on the inner wall of the pipe, and the sealing and connection are achieved by rotating and locking the flange during assembly. Structural Form Of Loose Ring Flange
The primary component of a loose ring flange is the flange ring itself. It is a circular disc with holes drilled around its perimeter to accommodate bolts. This ring serve as the interface between the two flange components being connected, such as pipes or equipment.
Loose type flanges are joined together using bolts and nuts. The bolts pass through the holes in the flange ring and are secured with nuts on the opposite side. These bolts apply clamping force to the flange assembly, ensuring a tight seal between the connected components.
A gasket is placed between the two flange components to provide a sealing surface and prevent leakage of fluids or gases. The gasket is typically made of a compressible material such as rubber, cork, or PTEE(Teflon). When the bolts are tightened, the gasket is compressed, forming a seal between the flange faces.
The facing of the loose flange refers to the surface finish of the flange where it comes into contact with the gasket. The facing may be smooth, raised face, or ring joint, depending on the sealing requirements of the application.
Loose ring flanges include a hub, which is a raised portion in the center of the flange ring. The hub provides additional strength and rigidity to the flange assembly and can serve as a guide for aligning the flange components during installation.
Loose Type Flange Standards
Loose type flange standards, established by organizations like the European Committee for Standardization (EN), and national standards bodies such as DIN (German), JIS (Japanese), and BS (British), provide comprehensive specifications for the design, manufacturing, and performance of loose flanges used in industrial piping systems.
These standards outline requirements for dimensions, materials, tolerances, testing procedures, and marking, ensuring compatibility, reliability, and safety across various applications. Standards such as EN 1092, BS 4504, and GOST 12820 guide the selection, installation, and maintenance of loose flanges, facilitating efficient and standardized practices in the construction and operation of piping networks.
Installation Flexibility Of Loose Flange
Alignment Tolerance
Loose flanges can accommodate slight misalignment between piping components. This tolerance allows for easier installation without the need for precise alignment, saving time and effort during setup.
Ease Of Assembly
Loose ring flanges are simpler to install compared to rigid flanges because they do not require exact alignment for connection. The bolts can be loosely fitted initially, allowing for adjustments before final tightening, making installation more straightforward.
Adaptability
Loose type flanges are adaptable to changes in piping configurations or system expansions. They can be quickly taken apart and put back together without needing any special tools, facilitating modifications or repairs with minimal disruption to the system.
Reduction Of Stress
Loose flanges help reduce stress on piping components by allowing for natural movement and expansion/contraction. This flexibility mitigates the risk of damage or failure in the system, enhancing its reliability and longevity.
Connection Method Of Loose Ring Flange
- Place a gasket between the loose ring flange and the mating flange or equipment. The gasket provides a sealing surface and helps prevent leakage of fluids or gases;
- Align the bolt holes on the loose ring flange with those on the mating flange or equipment. Ensure that the flanges are properly aligned to facilitate bolt insertion and tightening;
- Insert the bolts into the bolt holes in the loose ring flange and the mating flange or equipment. Use enough bolts to evenly distribute the clamping force around the flange assembly;
- Begin tightening the bolts in a crisscross pattern, gradually increasing the torque on each bolt until they are snug. Continue tightening the bolts in a sequence that ensures an even distribution of force across the flange faces;
- Once all bolts are snug, tighten them to the torque value specified by the flange manufacturer or relevant industry standards. This ensures that the flange assembly is securely tightened and provides a proper seal;
- After tightening the bolts, visually inspect the flange assembly to ensure that it is properly aligned and seated. Check for any signs of leakage or misalignment that may require adjustment;
- Perform a pressure or leak test, if necessary, to verify the integrity of the flange connection and ensure that it can withstand the operating conditions.
Main Applications Of Loose Type Flange
In the field of industrial production, loose type flanges are usually used for pipe connections in high temperature, high pressure or flammable and explosive environments. Due to its semi-sleeved connection form, it can effectively reduce the torsional vibration and thermal expansion and cold contraction displacement of the pipeline system, making the operation of the pipeline system more stable.
In the field of pipe connection, loose flanges are suitable for the connection and conversion of pipes made of various materials. Whether they are traditional steel, copper, cast iron pipes, or pipes made of new materials such as composite materials, carbide, plastics, etc., they can all be connected using loop flanges, which greatly simplifies the installation and maintenance of pipelines.
In addition, loose ring flanges can also be used in various fields such as ocean platforms, spacecraft, nuclear power plants, deep-sea oil exploration, chemical industry, environmental protection, food processing, etc., becoming an important part of connecting pipelines and equipment.
