Lapped Joint Flange
A lapped joint flange is a type of flange connection where the stub end or lap joint is attached to the flange, allowing easy assembly and disassembly of the joint. This flange consists of two separate components: the stub end and the backing flange. The stub end is welded to the pipe, while the backing flange, which typically features a raised face with bolt holes, is used to bolt the joint to another flange or equipment. Lapped flanges are commonly employed in applications where frequent dismantling or maintenance is required, as they facilitate quick and hassle-free disconnection without the need for cutting or welding the pipe. Lap Joint Pipe Assembly And Disassembly
1. Weld the stub end to the pipe according to the appropriate welding procedure. Ensure that the weld is strong and free from defects to provide a secure connection;
2. Slide the stub end into the bore of the backing flange until it reaches the desired position. The end of the stub should protrude slightly beyond the face of the flange lap;
3. Align the stub end and lap flange joint to ensure that they are concentric and properly positioned. This step is crucial for creating a leak-tight seal and preventing misalignment issues;
4. Place the gasket between the faces of the stub end and lap joint pipe flange to provide a seal. Insert bolts through the bolt holes in the lap joint fitting and align them with the corresponding holes in the stub end;
5. Gradually tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench to ensure even distribution of pressure.
1. Using a wrench, gradually loosen the bolts in a crisscross pattern to release the pressure on the joint. Be careful not to remove the bolts completely until all bolts have been loosened to avoid uneven stress on the joint;
2. Once all bolts are loosened, remove them from the bolt holes in the lap joint fitting;
3. Carefully separate the lapped joint flange from the stub end by pulling them apart. If necessary, use a pry bar or similar tool to gently pry them apart;
4. Inspect the stub end, lapped flange, and gasket for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion. Replace any components that show signs of deterioration to ensure the integrity of the joint;
5. Clean the stub end and lap joint flange to remove any residue or debris that could affect the performance of the joint during reassembly
Design And Structure Of Lapped Joint Flange
Stub End
The stub end is a cylindrical piece with a tapered or straight end that is welded to the pipe. It typically has a short length compared to other flange types. The end of the stub is either lap jointed or buttwelded to the pipe, providing a smooth transition and connection. This component acts as a loose collar allowing the assembly to swivel for alignment during installation.
Lapped Flange
The lapped flange, is a flat plate with bolt holes around the perimeter and a raised face. It is designed to fit over the stub end and provide the bolting surface for connecting to another flange or equipment. The raised face helps create a seal when tightened against a matching flange, such as a weld neck or slip-on flange.
Lap Flange Applications
Stub end and lap joint flanges are employed in piping systems for transporting corrosive chemicals and fluids. Their corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance make them suitable for environments where chemical compatibility is essential.
In water treatment facilities, lap joint pipes are utilized for conveying treated water, wastewater, and chemicals. Their ability to handle varying water qualities and ease of disassembly facilitate efficient maintenance and repairs
Flanges lap are found in pipelines, offshore platforms, refineries, and petrochemical plants. They enable quick disassembly for maintenance and modifications in environments with high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.
Lap flanges joint are used in ductwork connections in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Their ease of installation and alignment flexibility make them suitable for maintaining airflow and temperature control in buildings.
Lap joint pipe flanges are employed in food processing plants for conveying food products, beverages, and ingredients. Their sanitary design and ease of cleaning ensure compliance with hygiene standards and facilitate regular maintenance.
Lap joint fittings find applications in power plants for transporting steam, water, and other fluids used in power generation processes. Their ability to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction is crucial in high-temperature applications.
Lap Joint Flange Types
Stainless Steel Lap Joint Flange
Stainless lap joint flanges retain the inherent properties of stainless steel, including high strength, durability, and resistance to high temperatures. They are available in various stainless steel grades, such as F304, F304L, F316, F316L, 316Ti, each offering specific properties suitable for different applications and environments.
Carbon Steel Lap Joint Flange
Carbon steel lap joint flanges are known for their robustness and resistance to mechanical stress, making them suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. They are typically manufactured in various grades of carbon steel, such as A105, SS400, SF440 RST37.2, S235JRG2, P250GH, C22.8. Choosing the suitable grade depends on factors such as the operating conditions, temperature, and pressure requirements of the application.
Copper Lap Joint Flange
Copper lap joint flanges are often employed in applications such as plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC systems, and water distribution networks. They are particularly favored in installations where copper piping is prevalent, ensuring compatibility and uniformity in the system.
Lap Joint Pipe Flange Standards
Our lapped joint flanges are typically designed to conform to industry standards, such as lap JIS, ANSI, DIN, BS4504, SABS1123, EN1092-1, UNI, AS2129, GOST-12820.
Lapped Flange Sizes And Pressure Ratings
Our lap flanges are available in DN15-DN2000 and pressure ratings are ANSI class 150, 300, 600, 1500, 2500, DIN PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40, PN64, PN100, PN160.
Advantages Of Stub End And Lap Joint Flange
One of the primary advantages is their flexibility in alignment. The stub end can swivel within the lap joint pipe, allowing for easy alignment of the piping system during installation. This flexibility helps compensate for minor misalignments, reducing the risk of leaks and ensuring a tight seal.
Stub end and flange lap assemblies are designed for easy assembly and disassembly. Unlike welded flange connections, they can be quickly disconnected without disturbing the entire piping system. This feature facilitates maintenance, repairs, and modifications, reducing downtime and labor costs.
Lap flanges joint assemblies can be more cost-effective compared to other types of flange connections. Since only the stub end needs to be welded to the pipe, less welding labor and material are required, resulting in cost savings. Additionally, their ease of maintenance and reusability contribute to long-term cost-effectiveness.
Lap joint pipe flanges assemblies are versatile and applicable in a wide range of uses across various industries. They are suitable for systems with frequent maintenance requirements, as well as for applications where alignment flexibility and ease of disassembly are essential.
