Slip On Flange
A slip on flange is a popular type of pipe flange used in various industries for its ease of installation and cost efficiency. It is designed to slide over the end of a pipe, with the flange then welded both inside and outside to provide strength and prevent leakage. The slip on flange’s low hub allows for a snug fit over the pipe, simplifying alignment during installation. It is commonly utilized in low to moderate pressure applications, such as in water, gas, and chemical pipelines, offering flexibility and reliability in a wide range of piping systems. Slip On Flange Types
This is the most common type, featuring a small raised section around the bore. The raised face helps in improving the strength of the seal, making it suitable for high-pressure applications.
This type has a flat contact surface and is typically used in low-pressure applications where the mating flange or surface is also flat. They are commonly found in systems where cast iron or fiberglass is used.
Designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, the RTJ flange features a groove cut into the face of the flange. A metal ring gasket is seated in this groove, providing a strong seal. RTJ flanges are commonly used in oil and gas industries.
Used in conjunction with a stub end, the lap joint flange is slipped over the pipe but is not welded or fastened directly to the pipe. This allows for easy disassembly and alignment, making it ideal for systems requiring frequent maintenance or inspection.
Although not technically a slip-on flange, it shares a similar application in that it can be slipped onto the pipe without welding. Instead, it is screwed onto the threaded pipe. It is commonly used in low-pressure systems where welding might be hazardous.
Slip On Flange Use
Low To Moderate Pressure Systems
Slip on flanges are commonly used in systems where the pressure is not extremely high, such as water supply lines, gas pipelines, and steam lines.
General Industrial Piping
These flanges are utilized in a wide range of industrial applications, including oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, and manufacturing. They provide a reliable means of connecting pipes, valves, and other equipment.
Maintenance And Repair
Slip on flanges are preferred in systems that require frequent maintenance or inspection because they are easy to install and remove. This makes them ideal for temporary installations or systems with high maintenance needs.
Slip On Flange Standard
This is one of the most commonly used standards for slip-on flanges in the United States. It covers flanges for use in piping systems, including dimensions, tolerances, and pressure-temperature ratings. It applies to flanges from NPS 1/2 to NPS 24.
This standard is used for larger diameter flanges, specifically for sizes NPS 26 and larger. It provides specifications for flanges used in high-pressure applications and covers dimensions and tolerances.
These are German standards that specify dimensions for slip-on flanges used in Europe. DIN 2573 is for slip-on flanges in standard pressure classes, while DIN 2576 covers those in higher pressure classes.
This international standard specifies dimensions for slip-on flanges used in industrial piping systems. It is similar to the ASME B16.5 standard but is used globally and includes flanges up to DN 6000.
This standard, issued by the American Petroleum Institute, covers slip-on flanges used in the oil and gas industry. It includes specifications for large diameter flanges and high-pressure applications.

The type of material used affects the cost. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. For example, stainless steel flanges generally cost more than carbon steel flanges.
Flanges designed for higher pressure ratings (e.g., ANSI Class 150, 300, 600) are usually more expensive due to the need for stronger materials and more rigorous testing.
Larger diameter flanges and those with higher pressure ratings tend to be more expensive. For example, a small NPS 1/2 slip-on flange will typically cost less than a large NPS 24 flange.
Bulk purchases often result in lower unit prices. Manufacturers may offer discounts for larger orders.
Custom or non-standard flanges, such as those with specific dimensions or coatings, can be more expensive than standard flanges.
