Compact Flange
Compact flange, with a unique wedge-shaped seal, has a 20-fold increase in contact area over traditional seals, providing a smaller, lighter, and more sealed connection. The reduction in size of the compact flange is a result of the decreased diameter of the seal, which ultimately leads to a reduction in the cross-section of the sealing surface.
Advantages Of Compact Flange
Compact flanges not only save space and reduce weight, but more importantly, ensure that there will be no leakage at the joint.
The compact flange’s reduced size is due to a smaller seal diameter, resulting in a smaller sealing surface.
In addition, a sealing ring has replaced the flange gasket to ensure a better match of the sealing surfaces.
Only a small amount of pressure is needed to compress the sealing surface, leading to a reduction in required pressure, bolt size, and number. This innovation yields a new product that is smaller and lighter, weighing 70% to 80% less than the traditional ANSI flange.
Compact Flange Working Principle
Under the action of bolt preload, the compact flange compresses the gasket between the sealing surfaces. When the compression force per unit area of the gasket reaches a certain value, the gasket will be deformed and compacted, filling the unevenness on the sealing surface, thus forming the initial sealing condition to prevent the leakage of the medium.
The required compression force is called the preload sealing pressure of the gasket, and the unit is MPa. The preload sealing pressure is mainly determined by the gasket material. The internal pressure axial force stretches in the working state, reducing the compression force.
The gasket has sufficient rebound ability to compensate for deformation, and the preload sealing pressure value is not less than a certain value (working sealing pressure – the minimum pressure that must be retained between the sealing surface and the gasket to prevent the medium from leaking.) to maintain a good seal. On the contrary, if the rebound is insufficient, the preload sealing pressure drops below the working sealing pressure, or even a gap reappears at the seal, then the seal fails.

Main Precautions For Compact Flange Installation
- Before installing the flange, check and confirm the flange sealing surface and gasket to ensure that there are no defects that affect the sealing performance, and remove the protective grease on the flange sealing surface.
- The bolts connecting the flange should be able to penetrate freely.
- The installation direction and exposed length of the flange bolts should be consistent.
- Tighten the nut by hand to ensure that the nut can rotate smoothly on the stud.
- The flange installation cannot be skewed, and the parallelism of the flange sealing surface must meet the specification requirements.
