ASME B16.9 fittings are generally factory-made steel butt-weld fittings. ASME B16.9 fittings are one of the different types of pipe fittings; they implement the ASME standard. Different types of pipe fittings provide us with more choices. We can choose the corresponding pipe fittings according to production needs.
ASME B16.9 Factory-Made Forged Butt-Weld Fittings
This standard covers the dimensions, dimensional tolerances, ratings, testing, and marking of wrought carbon and alloy steel factory-made butt-weld fittings from NPS 1/2 through 48. This standard covers fittings of any producible wall thickness. This standard does not cover low-pressure, corrosion-resistant butt-weld fittings.
Pipe fittings are a general term for parts in the pipeline system that play the role of connection, control, change of direction, diversion, sealing, support, etc. Pipe fittings cover a wide range, and common ones include flanges, joints, pipe clamps, ferrules, throat clamps, tees, etc.
The well-known American National Standard ASME B16.9 “Steel Pipe Flanges and Flange Fittings” is a relatively complete, mature, internationally popular, and common advanced standard.
This standard and other related ANSI, API, ASTM, and MSS pressure pipeline application standard systems are formed based on many experimental studies and have undergone decades of practical tests. Therefore, it is a scientific and advanced standard widely accepted by various countries.
Commonly Used ASME Standards For Designing ASME B16.9 Fittings
There are two standards: the component size type and material standard. The type standard specifies the type, series, size, tolerance, test requirements, and material standards that can be used for the component.
The material standard specifies the applicable object, raw material (blank) variety (using forged or forged), chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing process (including welding), heat treatment, non-destructive inspection, sampling and performance inspection, quality certificate, mark, etc.
ASME B16.9 Fittings Material Standards
ASTM/ASME material standards are mainly collected in ASME II Part A Iron-based materials, Part B Non-ferrous materials, Part C Welding rods, welding wire filler metals, Part D Performance, and some supplementary content. Part A and Part D are the typical ones related to pressure pipeline design.
The main categories of Part A are steel plates, sheets and strips, nominal pipes (Pipe), tubes (Tube), steel flanges, fittings, valves and parts, steel plates, sheets and strips for pressure vessels, structural steel, steel bars, steel bolt materials, steel billets and forgings, steel castings, corrosion-resistant steel and heat-resistant steel, wrought iron, cast iron and malleable cast iron, as well as method standards, etc.
The material representation method uses “standard number-level” and UNS. For example, 304 is a level. The TP in front of TP316 represents the pipe, the first letter of the English word TUBE & PIPE.
The F in front of F316 stands for forgings, which is the abbreviation of FORGING. Generally, in ASME, many refer to ASTM standards and add an S in front of them, such as A312, which is SA312 after being incorporated into ASME. In ASTM standards, A stands for A series materials, and there are also B, C, etc.
ASME B16.9 Fittings Steel Pipe Outer Diameter Size Series Information and Wall Thickness
Steel pipe outer diameter size series are divided into large and small outer diameters, and the ASME standard adopts the large outer diameter. After the outer diameter size is positioned, the related steel pipes, pipe fittings, valves, flanges, gaskets, fasteners, accessories, etc., must match it.
As for the flange series, one type is “European flange” with 200℃ as the calculation base temperature, and the other type is “American flange” with about 430℃ (300℃ for 150LB grade) as the base temperature.
The ASME standard steel pipe outer diameter size series standards are ANSI B36.10 and ANSI B36.19, and the nominal diameter range is DN6~DN2000mm. There are three ways to express the wall thickness of steel pipes: pipe schedule (SCH), wall thickness (mm), and weight (STD, XS, XXS).
